The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has commended the progress made in implementing the Supreme Court judgment that affirmed financial autonomy of local governments in Nigeria.
According to Hon. Odunayo Ategbero, Chairman of ALGON’s Board of Trustees, the federal government’s implementation committee has made significant strides despite encountering challenges.
The committee, he disclosed, has instructed local governments to open accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for seamless financial operations.
ALGON emphasized the need for autonomy to address critical issues such as security, health, and education at the grassroots level.
With over 80% of Nigerians residing in local government areas, ALGON stressed the importance of empowering local governments to drive social, political, and rapid development. This includes implementing developmental issues to better the lives of citizens at the grassroots level.
The association noted that democracy has returned to the local government level, with state governors conducting elections, a departure from the past where tickets were handed out.
This development is seen by the Association as a positive step towards effective governance at the local level.
Former National President of ALGON, Hon. Ibrahim Dasuki Jalo, stated that ALGON is determined to partner with the states and federal government to achieve maximum results, despite being handicapped by funds.
