IGP Wife, Mutiat  Disu Launches POWA Cares Initiative in Lagos; Targets 1,000 Women with Health Services, Grants and Empowerment

The Wife of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu and National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Mrs. Mutiat Olufunmilola Disu, today Tuesday 28th April declared open the two-day POWA Cares Initiative in Lagos, unveiling a far-reaching programme designed to improve the health and wellbeing of Police families and communities, National Association of Online Security News Publishers, NAOSNP can report.

Speaking at the launch, Mrs Disu disclosed that about 1,000 women are expected to benefit from the intervention. She explained that the initiative was born out of compassion for Police officers and their families, particularly in cases where lives are lost due to limited health awareness and late detection of illnesses.

Drawing from her medical background, she said the programme seeks to educate women, promote early diagnosis, and encourage timely treatment of diseases. She added that POWA would award scholarships to 15 nursing students to boost interest in the profession amid growing shortages linked to migration trends.

Participants at the event received a range of medical services, including dental care, eye screening, blood tests, blood pressure checks, reproductive health screening, and glucose testing.

Beyond healthcare, Mrs Disu noted that the initiative includes sensitisation for young adults on social vices, reinforcing POWA’s broader commitment to family and societal development.

A major highlight was a raffle draw that saw 200 women receive N50,000 each, while another 200 beneficiaries were given Cowry cards preloaded with N10,000 for transportation on train services and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems. Selected families will also enjoy exclusive dinners—five with the Lagos State Governor and another five with the Inspector-General of Police.

Among beneficiaries were Mrs Joy Ezirim, Mrs Fakoya Olaide, Agboola Agnes, Ubine Ladidi, Kehinde Magbagbeolu, Hakimat Usman and Temilola Ayeni.

Commending the initiative, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Fatai Tijani described it as “first of its kind,” noting that healthy families enable police officers to perform their duties more effectively.

Also speaking, Mrs. Olusola Ositade, Deputy Director (Nursing) at the Lagos State Ministry of Health urged women to prioritise their health through early detection, openness, and self-care.

Mrs Disu expressed optimism about expanding the programme nationwide, calling on state governments to collaborate with POWA to replicate the initiative across all 36 states.
