The Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) has reinforced the operational capacity of the Nigerian Navy with the presentation of 50 bulletproof vests, 50 ballistic helmets and 100 raincoats to the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft Lagos, in a strategic intervention aimed at enhancing personnel protection and operational readiness. The intervention comes as security agencies intensify preparations to safeguard lives, property and critical infrastructure across Lagos, particularly ahead of the forthcoming election period.
The donation also underscores the LSSTF’s sustained approach of identifying operational gaps across security formations and providing targeted support to ensure that personnel are adequately equipped to respond effectively to emerging security challenges. The presentation were made at the NNS Beecroft HQ, Apapa, Lagos.
In the same vein, the Executive Secretary/CEO of LSSTF, Dr. Ogunsan alongside his host, the NNS Beecroft Commander, Commodore Adams A. Aliu paid a courtesy visit to the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Apapa, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Abubakar Mustapha, mni. The visit came in the bid to enhance the military aid towards strengthening civil authority for the security and safety of Lagos and Nigeria as a whole.
During the presentation of the security equipment and gadgets to the NNS Beecroft, the Executive Secretary/CEO of LSSTF, Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan, said the intervention was part of the Trust Fund’s established responsibility to strengthen security agencies through continuous assessment and strategic support. “It is a normal tradition as the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund to constantly visit all the security agencies in the state to see how they are doing, to ensure that we boost the morale of the officers and encourage the commanders. We do on-site inspections to see areas of intervention.”
He disclosed that the latest visit to NNS Beecroft resulted in the provision of the protective equipment and raincoats, adding that further interventions were being planned. “Today we have come here to NNS Beecroft to donate 50 units of ballistic helmets, 50 units of bulletproof vests. We’ve also donated 100 units of raincoats because of the season we are in now. And there are other things that we have discussed behind closed doors that we are going to address very shortly.”
Ogunsan explained that the interventions were driven by the LSSTF’s mandate to identify and bridge operational gaps within recognised security agencies operating in Lagos. “That is our core mandate, that is our responsibility. We are established as an interventionist agency to address and fill all the gaps that we feel that are there.”
He stressed that the ultimate expectation was improved performance from security agencies, particularly in protecting Lagos residents. “To whom much is given, much is expected. All these interventions across all security agencies is definitely to expect more from them. And the main important thing is security, safety of lives and property, especially now that we are approaching a very sensitive period, the elections.”
Receiving the items, the Commander of NNS Beecroft, Commodore Adams Aliu, described the intervention as a significant boost to the Navy’s internal security operations. He expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government and Dr. Ogunsan, noting that the equipment would support the Navy’s mandate of keeping Lagos waterways and adjoining land areas safe and secure.
The Commander particularly highlighted the constitutional responsibility of the Armed Forces to provide Military Aid to Civil Authority and Military Aid to Civil Power, describing the protective equipment as a major addition to ongoing internal security operations.
The donation reinforces the LSSTF’s growing role in strengthening the operational capabilities of Lagos security agencies, with its interventions increasingly focused not only on equipment and mobility but also on personnel protection, welfare and preparedness for emerging security demands.
