SANWO-OLU CHARGES ICAN ON BEST PRACTICES 

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has charged the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) not to relent in exposing its members and stakeholders to international best practices in a bid to position the Institution as a viable tool towards the economic, social and political development of Nigeria. 

The Governor gave the advice in his address at the 17th Western Zonal Accountants Conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), tagged “Oba 2023’, held at CBN Hall, Phase III, Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON), Topo Badagry, adding that such effort will identify and prevent sharp practices that can hinder the social-economic development of the country. 

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented at the event by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mr. Temitope Sewanu Hundogan, emphasised that there should be synergy between the Institute and Government towards providing solutions to the myriads of economic challenges faced by the Nation.  

He noted that the Institution is the foremost professional accountancy body in Nigeria with great repute all over the world which gives credence to the capacity of its members who are constantly making great strides in the development of the nation’s economy. He declared that professional accountants are vital in the maintenance of sound organisational governance, sustainable and financial growth. 

“I hope this conference, themed ‘Professional Accountants, Uncertain Economy and Sustainability Development’, will bring to limelight the importance of the Accounting Profession in improving the economy and enhancing development across the country”, Sanwo-Olu said. 

Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Pastor Egbetokun Olurotimi Samuel (PhD, FCA) stated that the event was specifically designed to empower members of the Institution with practical knowledge and skills to make them better Accountants while also equipping them with the right strategies to turnaround the ailing economy. 

Noting that the conference is historic because it is the first time the Western Zonal Accountants Conference will be held in Badagry, Lagos State, Egbetokun applauded the Lagos State Government for being supportive of the Institution by creating an enabling environment for it to thrive. 

Notable personalities that graced the occasion include the 58th President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Mallam Tijjani Musa Isa; Conference Director/Host District Chairman, Noble Taiwo Moshood Folaranmi as well as Western Zonal District Chairmen and Council Members.
